Thorstein Veblen wrote about us. He just did not know he was writing about a cashmere coat on a white background, or a woman looking away from the camera in a manner that communicates both availability and indifference. In 1899 he named the machinery—conspicuous consumption, pecuniary emulation, the performance of having enough to waste—and the machinery has not changed. It has only become more beautiful.

This book does not editorialize. It simply places the argument next to the evidence and lets the distance between them do the work. Veblen's prose is dense, clinical, almost Victorian in its patience. The images are immediate, frictionless, designed to be wanted. Together they form something uncomfortable—a mirror held up at an angle, showing you the back of your own head.

The Leisure Class, Still

Veblen's central claim was that the ruling class signals status not through productivity but through its visible rejection of it. Idleness, he argued, was the original luxury good. Look at the catalogue. Nobody is working. Nobody is even trying to look like they might.

The Image As Argument

Fashion photography has always understood what philosophy takes pages to say. A single image—the right light, the right nothing happening—communicates class, aspiration, and exclusion faster than language can follow. Veblen needed a book. The catalogue needs thirty seconds and a very good lens.

What We Buy When We Buy

The object is rarely the point. The coat keeps no one warmer than a cheaper coat. What is being purchased is position—a legible place in a hierarchy that everyone pretends not to believe in and everyone, without exception, understands. Veblen called it emulation. We call it taste. The word has changed. The transaction has not.
